Summary of Position:  The Associate Engineer is a mid-level position in the engineering department, responsible for professional engineering work related to the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of various public works projects. Under direction and minimal supervision, an Associate Engineer performs complex engineering work and acts as supervisor to a small group of engineers and/or technical staff. Associate Engineers may serve as project engineers/resident engineers on small projects or assistant resident engineers on complex engineering projects.

Potential Duties Include:

  • Develop plans and specifications for the construction of public works improvement projects

  • Perform hydrology and hydraulics analysis

  • Perform street, storm drain and sewer design for public agencies

  • Knowledge of Standard Specification for public works Construction (commonly known as Green Book)

  • Maintain knowledge of Caltrans design and construction standards

  • Prepare and/or analyze maps, plats, calculations, and field measurements

  • Develop and/or analyze cost estimates for civil engineering and land development projects

  • Review and process land development applications and submittals, including parcel and subdivision maps and improvement plans for conformance with local codes and design principles

  • Review and process right-of-way, grading or other permits required for public works projects

  • Analyze engineering reports, maps, drawings, tests, etc., on soil compositions, terrain, hydrological characteristics and other topographical and geologic data

  • Analyze complex engineering problems and issues

  • Develop and/or maintain databases, spreadsheets and reports to monitor performance of engineering or public works projects and/or operations

  • Administer public works’ construction contracts

  • Oversee work performed by our entry-level engineers

  • Develop project schedules and budgets

  • Perform other duties as assigned

    Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university

  • Well versed in the principles and practices of engineering and applicable laws and codes related to public works projects with a high level of independent judgment

  • 3+ years of work experience as an Assistant Engineer or equivalent

  • Active Professional Engineering registration in the state of California or specialty certificates are highly desired

  • Experience with methods, materials and techniques used in the design and construction of public works projects
